My idea started as a simple accident when I set a necklace I had purchased around year ago on top of my cell phone and noticed how interesting the accident became. I moved the stone over to a smaller idea and placed an image of a young Stevie Nicks in the back of the stones setting. In an instant people were beginning to comment on the necklace, and kept asking me what kind of stone it was. After being granted a closer look people were amazed at what they were seeing, an image in the stone. the next question was a simple and obvious one,"How did you do that?" A year has passed, and I have made more of these lo-tech pieces with the idea of eventually placing an LED, or LCD screen behind the stone and using the other parts of the necklace to contain the power, and files. A small camera is another idea to make what i would like to call, live jewelry, either for elegance, or remembrance. As far a my project goes, I simply used the same concept that coxed Stevie into the stone into my my melding of image to material. Some of the images are a stone, and a particular image behind them, others are images based off of the shape of the stone and the guidance it brought to the software. Some of the images went as planned, while others began to take on more of a conceptual form/idea. At no point was I trying to make something to hang on a wall, but more of a collection of images that could be used for PR, or in a bio, or catalog. ALL stones but the first are mine, and all photographs were take by myself and a mac laptop cam.
As ghost like and subliminal as the Stevie Stone was, so became the idea about being trapped; an idea I did not notice until i was almost finished and looked at how upset, and grim I appeared in some of the settings. In my own life one of my major issues I'm working on in a psychological sense is the idea of being the trapper, and the trapped. The house were I reside fort the time being is a shell of an old relationship, along with others issues not for the sharing. But the point is still made, and I find that the concept of the stone and image brings a sense of permanence and antiquity.
To explain my process is very simple. I would import, cut, paste, blend, fade, erase, contrast, in no particular manner, just what seemed appropriate for the piece. Enjoy...
